How to play Block Drop
Blocks fall one at a time into the well. Move and rotate each piece so it lands flush against the stack below, and when a horizontal row is filled all the way across it clears, dropping everything above it down by one. The run ends when the stack reaches the top and the next piece has nowhere to go. The Next panel shows the piece after this one, so the landing can be planned before the current piece is down.
Controls
- Keyboard: ← and → move, ↑ or Z rotates, ↓ soft-drops a row at a time, and Space hard-drops the piece straight to the floor.
- Touch: five buttons sit under the well (move left, rotate, move right, soft drop and hard drop) so the whole game is playable one-handed on a phone.
- Pause from the button in the status bar; the speaker beside it mutes the sound.
Scoring, levels and speed
Clearing lines is what scores, and clearing several rows in one drop is worth far more than clearing them one at a time: the four-row clear is the big one. Every line score is multiplied by the current level, and a hard drop adds a small bonus for each cell the piece fell, so committing early to a placement pays.
The level goes up every ten lines cleared, and gravity gets faster with it: each level’s fall period is about 82% of the one before, down to a floor. A board you could tidy comfortably at level 1 has to be read at a glance by level 8.
Questions
Is Block Drop free?
Yes, completely. There is nothing to download, nothing to install, no account and no sign-up. The page loads and the game runs in the browser tab, on desktop or phone.
Does Block Drop work on a phone?
Yes. Under the well there are five touch buttons (move left, rotate, move right, soft drop and hard drop) so the game is fully playable on a touchscreen without a keyboard.
What kind of game is Block Drop?
It is a falling-block stacking puzzle: the genre people usually mean by a block puzzle or a line-clearing game. Pieces of different shapes fall into a well, you rotate and place them, and completed rows disappear.
Where is my high score saved?
In this browser's local storage, on this device only. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and clearing your site data clears the score.
